Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest mountain in the world lies in the north-west central part of Nepal and the highest point which is at the eastern end of the lone summit ridge is Dhaulagiri 1. Dhaulagiri in Sanskrit means "white mountain" and it was first climbed by the Swiss team in 1960 via the North East ridge. It is considered an interesting peak and more than six different routes have been established. It is the highest snowy peak in the himalaya.
There are however two main possibilities to reach the base camp. Both ways start from south at the small town of Beni (860 m) which can by reached by bus from Pokhara and Kathmandu.
The eastern valley is called Kali Gandaki and was chosen by the French expedition in 1950. Today there is even an airport at Jomsom (2700 m) in this valley. On the west side of this valley is Dhaulagiri, on the east side is Annapurna.
