This short and reasonably flat walk through the foothills of the Annapurna region allows all aspects of a camping trip. The Royal Trek owes its title to Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, who walked this route with a number of sherpas and 1500 Ghurka soldiers in December 1980. Due to the low altitude, the Royal Trek can even be done in winter.
By bus we drive from Kathmandu to Bijaypur Khola, a river northeast of Pokhara. The Royal Trek makes a loop over a ridge and goes along the lakes of Dipang, Begnas and Rupa. We walk through rice fields, forests, Hindu and Buddhist villages, and cross a low pass where we can enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets with a magnificent view of the Annapurna (8091m), Machhapuchhare (6993m), Dhaulagiri (8167m) and Lamjung Himal.
This trip is basically recommended for beginners or those who have very limited time but yet looking for an opportunity to squeeze in an experience of a trekking holiday in the Himalaya. The entire trek is rather easy with occasional up and downhill hikes along the ridges and valleys without having to worry about altitude and acclimatization as the maximum ascent on this trek is Chisapani at 1260 meter. After one night in Pokhara we fly back to Kathmandu.
