The main festival of Lomanthang is Tenchi, or Teeji and is celebrated over 3 days to mark the killing of a Demon by Dorje Sonam.Teeji is derivative of Tibetan word of "Tempa Chhirim" which means, prayer of the world peace. This is a festival that is indigenous to Lomanthang and commemorates the victory of Dorje Sonam, an incarnation of Buddha, over the demon called Ma Tam Ru Ta, Who wrecked havocs on humans in the forms of storms, floods and droughts. One monk must stay in seclusion for 3 months prior to the festival to prepare for the role of Dorje Sonam in the ritual dances. One the third day of the ceremony, he defeats an afigy of the demon in the dance. Teeji falls on the third month in the Tibetan calendar which is in late April or early May in every year.
