Upper Dolpo runs the parallel to the image of the Shangri-la of Nepal in many aspects. Its dramatic landscape, rugged natural beauty, rich culture and experience of remoteness is almost beyond measure. Upper Dolpo is one of the last sanctuaries of medicinal plants. 407 species of medicinal plants are found in Dolpo. The ancient cultural tradition of buddhism can be experienced first hand here. Remoteness of this place has helped to conserve the traditions still found eminently present.
It is covered by virgin forests and is one of the worlds best habitats for the elusive snow leopard, blue sheeps, ghoral, musk deer, and other rare wildlife.
There are over 130 Gompas(Monastery) in this region. Visiting the Shey Gompa, to the north of the Phoksundo Lake, Saldang, Dho trap, Chharka, where some of the oldest Gompas over 700 years in the Himalaya can be visited. It is here specifically that people still practice the pre-Buddhist Bon Po religion. This early sect was almost entirely replaced after Buddhist doctrine began to spread across Tibet in the 9th century. The view of this un-spoilt heaven hidden from the world is magnificent to the weary eyes of modern people in the world.
