Nepal boasts 848 recorded species of the birds. An ardent bird watcher can travel the length and breadth of Nepal doing little else but bird watching. Birding is possible everywhere in Nepal from the plains in the south , the Kathmandu valley in the mid hills, to the mountainous regions of the North.
Bird Watching in Chitwan National Park:
Chitwan national park is famous for the bird watching. The forest is alive during summer with the arrival of migrant birds paradise flycatchers, parakeets and indian pitta. While winter birds including waterfowl, Brahminy ducks, pintails, bar-headed geese, cormorants. The place where migratory birds arrive from as far as Siberia during winter. Other birds varieties are several species of woodpeckers, hornbills, peacocks, peahens, floricans and redheaded trogons, among others. No doubt, this is a birdwatcher\'s paradise.
Bird Watching in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve:
Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve has carved a place for itself as a bird watcher\'s paradise. the Reserve has been recognized since 1987 as awetland site. The vegetation of the reserve is mainly grassland with patches of scrub and deciduous rivering forests. The reserve has
recorded 450 species of bird variety, some of which fly from Siberia during the winter. There is more than 20 species of ducks, herons, storks, egrets, Black Ibis are seen on the riverbanks.Other species are Honey kites, Ospreys, Black headed Orioles, Peregrine Falcon, Patridges and Storks.
Bird Watching in Kathmandu Valley
Out of 848 species available in Nepal, 500 different species are available on only in Kathmadnu valley and its surroundings. The surrounding hills offer a varied ecology ranging from primary and secondary forests to rhododendrons, oak and pine forests. In addition, the wetlands and open fields inside the valley make up a diverse habitat for many species of birds. The Kathmandu valley has four main bird watching areas. One can start on the banks of the Bagmati and Manohara Rivers . The Chovar gorge is particularly recommended as an area for birds as its isolation from human habitation has encouraged their presence. Godavari, at the foot of Phulchoki hill where the Royal Botanical Garden is situated, records over 100 species of birds including the lesser racket-tailed drongo, Tibetan siskin and the spotted forktail.
Bird Watching in Phulchowki Hill:
Phulchowki is another ideal site for Bird watching, with a Red- headed Trogon, A very rare bird sighted there in April 2000.(It was last seen 44 years ago).It is situated at 2760m above sea level and 18 KM south east of Kathmandu valley. The hillside is covered with forest featuring outstanding flora aswell as diverse birds. About 90 species of the birds have been recorded in this area including the Endemic spring Babblar, As well as the Cutia, Mountain Hawk eagle, Rufous bellied pied woodpeckers and the Black- throated parrotbill.
Bird Watching in Shivapuri Watershed:
Situated 12km to the North of Kathmandu, is another very good location and Nagarjuna on the North west. shivapuri can be reached 2 ways, either from Sundarijal or Budhanilkantha.Some of the birds in this area are Laughing thrush, Crested serpent eagle, Little pied Fly Catcher, Ruby- throats and Bablers. Nagarjuna at the height of 2105m, also a renowned sight for bird enthusiasts, where can find Pheasants, magpies, kalij, Sunbirds and Ruby-throats
Bird Watching in Pokhara Valley
In Pokhara, the two well known lakes Phewa Tal and Begnas Tal and the surrounding areas are highly recommended. Of particular interest are the areas with minimum disturbances, away from human inhabitation the forests around the south shore of Phewa
lake. Look out in the fields and pools especially in the winter for Egrets, Herons, Pipits, and Buntings etc. other birds are occurring are Gulls, Terns, Ducks, and Falcons etc.
